Giving Back This Season…
This time of year is a time that we all use to reflect on the good times and show all of our family how much we love them. So, why not do that for our favorite charities as well? As a family I want my child to know the importance of giving back and helping others. Especially at this time of year.
If you’re going to do any online shopping this season, and you use Amazon, give this a try. Instead of going to the normal website, go to Amazon Smile. It’s the same Amazon, but when you check out they will give a small percentage of what you spend to the charity of your choice. The great thing is, you don’t have to do anything, just use this site and money get’s donated. How easy is that? You can choose from a list of charities, or search for some of your favorites, and if they’re on the list you can choose them. If you don’t know which charity to choose, I’m partial to Cranio Care Bears, which is an organization that sends care packages to children undergoing craniofacial surgeries. We were a recipient of one of their packages last year when my son underwent his cranial surgery, so they are close to my heart. I’m sure they would appreciate the donation, no matter how small.
There are all kinds of charities that you can help out this season. Another one of my favorites that we usually support is The Salvation Army. Whether it’s giving a dollar or two here or there wherever you see their bell ringers, or volunteering your time. We used to take our church Youth Group every year and ring bells for a few hours. They had fun smiling and bringing the holiday spirit to others, and it gave them a chance to remember that this time of year isn’t only for getting presents.
Another good one is volunteering a little bit of your time to your local food pantry or community kitchen. I’ve done this in the past, and it’s a very humbling experience. This is something that you can do with your older children, and it really reminds you of all that you have to be thankful for.
My church is a big supporter of Operation Christmas Child. This organization sends shoeboxes full of supplies to countries all around the world. They include toys, games, and items as simple as socks and toothbrushes. You can join up with a local church or organization that are sending these out, or just go straight to their website and give. You can also include a letter in your shoebox to whomever is receiving it. I have received many letters from different countries, and it’s really amazing to see who your small gift is helping.
There are all kinds of things you can do in your hometown to give back this Holiday season. There are boxes everywhere for gift and food donations. So, if you are able to, please give a little. Spread a little cheer to someone who may not get to have such a Happy Holiday.
