Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets – Mrs. Bishop

It’s cold outside…really, really, really cold! My favorite breakfast on cold days is oatmeal. But, my toddler prefers his food be done in seconds. So, at our house, instant oatmeal is a staple. In attempt to be more frugal and healthier this year (more on that later), I tried my hand at making my own instant oatmeal packets. I’ve only tried one so far- but it’s delicious! I love it! It’s super convenient, easy, and I’m spending much less on ingredients, while controlling what I put in my body (no crazy chemicals added). Let’s get started-

First, gather your ingredients:

For my 2 recipes that I did today- oats, cinnamon, brown sugar, salt, milled chia seeds, raisins, and dark chocolate.
And then, label some baggies- I found these cute little snack size baggies, but sealable sandwich baggies would be fine.

Then, get to filling! I’ll post my recipe below- the only one I’ve tried so far is the brown sugar, cinnamon, raisin, because that’s how I like to eat my oatmeal. Then I made a few dark chocolate ones for when my sweet tooth hits!

After just a few minutes, viola! A bunch of breakfasts ready to go!

Cinnamon Raisin Instant Oatmeal

-1/2 cup oats
-1 tbsp brown sugar
-1 tsp cinnamon
-1 tbsp chia seeds (opt.)
-dash of salt
– sprinkling of raisins
I like to put all the dry ingredients in, shake it up, then put the raisins on top.
For the dark chocolate, I put in less sugar and only a dash of cinnamon.
The chia seeds are totally optional, I just had them on hand and thought, “why not?” Might as well add a little extra goodness if I can!
What I really love about this is, that you can mix it up and make any flavor that you like. You could put pb2 in them for peanut butter, add dried fruit, or fresh fruit after it’s cooked! The sky’s the limit!
I’ve seen some recipes that call for powdered milk or dry creamer for consistency purposes, but I actually always cook my oatmeal with milk instead of water- so I don’t add it. But if you prefer to use water, then go for it.
When I’m ready to eat it, I pour it in a bowl with about 2/3 cup of milk, stir it and microwave for 1 1/2 mins, stir, and then do another 20 seconds. Yum!
Let me know how you like it- and what are your favorite oatmeal flavors?
